Close Brussels, a new Belgian brand to discover

If you’ve visited a Planet Parfum store lately, you might have noticed Close Brussels, a new brand exclusively sold here. Founders are two beauty pioneers from Brussels, Tineke Bracke and Charlotte Walckiers, who decided to use their cosmetics experience to create an own brand with affordable luxury, quality, authenticity and a little twist as cornerstones. Some products are made in Belgium, others are designed in Belgium and made in Italy, and this “Belgitude” is proudly communicated on the packaging. I was one of the lucky birds to get to try five of these Close Brussels newbies.

Affordable as they are (all the products I’ve tried are sold for 9,90 euro), this implies low key packaging. No frills, just functional, basic plastic bottles and squeeze tubes in a fresh and attractive white and baby-blue color pattern with grey print. The fun, sassy names are another characteristic of Close Brussels’ products. Shake It & Get Naked is a bi-phase eye makeup remover, which means you have to shake it to mix the oils with the water-based ingredients in the formula. It effectively wipes my eye makeup and my waterproof mascara.

I clean the rest of my face with Silky, Milky, Super Star, a deep cleansing milk for all skin types. It does a good cleansing job and thanks to the oils and hydrating botanical extracts (silver linden, marshmallow root and chamomile), my skin doesn’t feel dehydrated after cleansing. To me its scent takes some getting used to, it’s an earthy-herbal fragrance, not unpleasant though.

I wipe away its traces with I’ll Have Another Skin Tonic, which has been designed to calm, hydrate and tonify the skin. The active botanical extracts are grapefruit, ginkgo biloba, chamomile, everlasting and horse chestnut. The formula is free of parabens, phthalates, synthetic colorants and animal ingredients and suits all skin types. It does contain some fragrance though, which adds a faint, fresh scent to it, this is at the bottom of the ingredients list.

Let’s get to the nail polish range next: Party Of Two is a transparent 2-in-1 serum + base coat. It can be used either as a regular base coat or you can use it alone to strengthen your nail.

The nail polishes feature a handy, flat brush with a rounded top, which allows precise application. Two coats offer an even, full coverage. These are Carluccio’s Vespa, a girly pink, and Kriek So Chic, a warm and vibrant red, which refers to “kriek” a cherry-flavored beer for which the Brussels region is famous. For extra gloss and to protect the nail polish, I follow with the top coat Señor Speedy. As it comes in the same vial as the base coat, it’s very handy that the top coat has a purply hue to it, so you can’t mix them up. It dries up quickly and completely transparent.

Overall, I think these products have a good price/quality ratio. Close Brussels also features makeup,  body care and more face care products. I’m certainly going to try others, the micellar water Micelle Ma Belle to start with. Happy discoveries!

For beauties on a budget,
Peggy
