Botox, fillers, meso therapy, lasers,… my personal story.

You might have seen it passing by on my InstaStories or IG feed, I’ve been interviewed for the first NINA Deluxe magazine. I have wondered if I should tell such a personal story…but hey it’s 2017 and for me it’s no taboo.

As you know I’ve been living on the Canary Islands for many years. I have lead a good life there but also I have been exposed to too much sun and I have eaten way too much delicious food. Not to mention the amazing wines they have over there… By the time I returned to Belgium I was not only 8 years older but also 10 kg heavier and the sun had definitely left traces on my face. Every time I looked in the mirror I felt ugly and worn out. On top, I saw al these beautiful young women and models passing my makeup chair and as much as I loved them all, it didn’t do any good for my self esteem. So I decided to play the role of a modern Hercule Poirot and went on Google investigation.

I’ve found an esthetic doctor in Hasselt, dr. Carine Wijnen, and made an appointment.  I wasn’t sure if I wanted to get something done but I got the feeling I could trust her, that she knew what she was doing. I told her I wanted to look fresher and less tired but I didn’t want it to look unnatural, with all do respect for those famous plastic Barbie’s, it’s not how I want to look.

That first time she injected me a filler on my left cheek, over the years I had gotten a deep line there. She also injected a filler on my forehead and that was it. I paid less than 100 Euros that first time. After a few days I saw the difference and although nobody else saw something had changed on my face, I noticed it and I felt content.

10 years later I still visit dr. Wijnen. She is a perfect match for me, as she is a great listener and fan of natural results. I never worry that I will become a plastic doll as she understands what I want and won’t go too far. The filler remains a yearly treatment and since a few years Botox has entered my life -or better my face-  too. I can’t have Botox in my forehead as I have a lazy eye, it would make it drop down even more. However she injects it between my brows since this year, to lift the left eye -which is the lazy one- and make it look more open. I don’t suffer from many laugh wrinkles around the eye area, but I have little lines more downwards to the cheeks, and those get freshened up, but not too much, every now and again.

When I was 20 years old, I never thought that one day I would think about anything like this. I was all about ‘growing gracefully older’. Just to show you how over the years ones mindset can change, obviously with a little help from society and influences.

I’m 46 years old. I have doubted a tiny bit to tell my story to NINA Deluxe, but on the other hand I thought ‘why not?’ In my job as a makeup artists I see many faces, young or more life experienced and you would be surprised how many women have gotten ‘something’ done but don’t like to admit it. For me, it’s no taboo. I won’t say that it has given my self confidence a boost -as mentionned in the magazine, it got a little funked up by the editor- however having a fresher face does make me feel better. As long as the result stays natural and my face matches my hands and neck I’m ok with it. I truly adminre the women that are confident and proud of themselves just the way they are, unfortunately, when it comes to my appearance, I’m not one of them.

Anyway… I’ve got a great new profile picture!
