Hairstyling on set: I like it natural
Hairstyling, a must if you work as a makeup artist.

The longer I work in the beauty bizz, the more picky I get when it comes to the products I use on my clients or models. I like to use skincare products with natural ingredients. When it comes to styling the hair, I also tend to go for products as pure as possible. In my search for the right hair care I came across a brand I had never heard about ‘WECOLOUR’.

WECOLOUR, natural haircare, no parbens, no silicons, shampoo, conditioner, Dark Bamboo, Peggy Timmermans, makeup artist, hairstylist

Who is WECOLOUR?
A brand born at the end of 2014, formed by two Dutchies with the same goal. A quality hair colour product at an affordable price, as pure as possible, and with excellent grey coverage.

How about me?
I’ve got quite some grey hair and dye my hair since many years but honestly, I’m too scared to dye my hair at home. I decided to try out the WECOLOUR haircare products, to get an idea what they are about and as always, to test them on myself before using them on my clients or models.

WECOLOUR Shampoo & Conditioner

This shampoo & conditioner are designed especially for coloured hair and doesn’t contain sls, paraben nor silicones. Due to the lack of sls you won’t get a foamy head when washing your hair. Don’t think that’s a bad thing. Quite the opposite in fact as sulfates (sls) will not only remove dirt, they will also remove the natural oils of your skin. Result: your hair will get dryer and weaker. True, I had to get used to a not foamy head in the shower but the conditioner really softens my hair with ingredients as pure as possible which I think is a big go-go.

WECOLOUR, natural haircare, no parbens, no silicons, shampoo, conditioner, Dark Bamboo, Peggy Timmermans, makeup artist, hairstylist

WECOLOUR Dark Bamboo

This is a product that really got my attention. It’s a purifying treatment with clay and bamboo, which cleanses, purifies and conditions the hair. WECOLOUR recommends to use Dark Bamboo twice a week, instead of the regular shampoo and conditioner. As it nourishes the hair too, you won’t need a conditioner or hair mask, however, you can.  The way in which Dark Bamboo differs from the WECOLOUR shampoo is that it is a (more) natural product which also has a detoxifying effect. It also removes added up heavy metals from your hair and scalp.

WECOLOUR Argan Silk

If you want hydrated, nourished hair and a silky shine this is the product for you. It also protects your hair against moist, heat and UV- damage.  Another product perfect for coloured hair. Even people with sensitive skin can use this leave-in conditioner as it does not contain sls, sulfates, paraben and peg (polyethylene glycol).`

WECOLOUR Volume Mousse

What to tell about the Volume Mousse other than it contains a bunch of natural ingredients such as pure camellia and silver lime.  These ingredients hydrate and protect the colour of your hair. On top, it gets the shine it deserves!

From natural to funky in three steps!
A natural makeup look can easily be turned into a funky look with just a few adjustments. Let me show you how!

I guess I can say I’m known for creating the natural look, a fresh and flawless face, a soft glow and a hint of colour. However, I do like to think out of the box and be creative. I love playing with texture and colours and that’s exactly what I did during this beauty shoot with the stunning Jolien Bas.

visagiste, make-up look, beautyshoot, colourful look, make-up artist, Peggy Timmermans, This Is Peggy

I started with creating a fresh base and added a soft glow on top of the cheekbones and the cupid bow. On the eyes a soft salmon coloured eyeshadow with a satin finish. As for brows I didn’t need to do much, as Jolien’s brows are almost perfect! I filled in the little gaps a bit and gave them a good brush. Just a hint of mascara and some old pinkish lipstick -which I applied with my fingers- to finish the look et voilà.

As both the photographer and myself like to try out new things, we experimented a bit with light.

For the second look I decided to ad some more colour to the eyes. Besides that I added a little bit more mascara.

When the photographer got the images he wanted he gave me carte blanche. Playtime! For the third look I didn’t think but just did! Powder, cream blush and lipstick, with this funky result! It’s all about textures.

When our lovely model asked us if she could have a freckled look we couldn’t resist! Time to remove the heavy eye look and start over. What do you think of this?

Aging gracefully: easier said than done!
Aging gracefully: what can we do to help our skin to stay long(er) young?

In nowadays society it’s not easy to stay confident and happy with yourself. Social media try to convince us ‘young & beautiful’ is the only way to go and if you’re not,  you’d better Facetune as if your life depends on it. When I post pictures of myself I don’t really photoshop or filter them, but I have to be honest here, I try to make sure the picture is taken in soft and great light, even a bit over lightning as that way wrinkles and aging spots are less visible. Removing an occasional spot or blemish might happen, but I try to stay away from heavy photoshopping. I do have skin.

Most of you know that once, sometimes twice a year I visit the esthetic doctor, for a little filler. I never go overboard as I really don’t like botoxed or plastic faces, but I have a deep line on my cheek which bothers me and filling that one up just makes me feel prettier.

I’m always intrigued when a new anti-aging device gets launched, always willing to try the latest. When the PR lady of NEWA approached me, I took some time to read about this device which is supposed to rejuvenate the skin, and decided to test it.

The NEWA Skin Rejuvenation System reduces wrinkles, lifts and tightens the skin using 3DEEP professional medical technology. NEWA triggers the skin’s natural collagen production, resulting in firmer, tighter, younger- looking skin. NEWA is the most clinically validated home use device available today, with published studies showing proven visible results.

How does it work? With the NEWA device comes an activator gel. Apply two ‘lines’ of gel on the top of the device and apply the gel onto the face from the middle to the outside in circular movements. After that, switch the device on and start working the area. Obviously your skin needs to be cleansed (not moisturizer applied) beforehand.  You will get the best result after 3 to 5 times a week, during a period of one month. When that month ends you can go to ‘maintenance mode’ which means using the device 2 times a week.

Each session -which means each zone- takes 4 minutes. If you would like to work on 4 zones of your face you need to block 25 minutes in your ‘me time’ agenda. Apply two ‘lines’ of gel on the top of the device and apply the gel onto the face from the middle to the outside in circular movements.

It doesn’t hurt, however for some people might experience a slight uncomfortable feel -as for the temperature- when they use the device on level 2 but that’s easily solved by switching it to level 1. NEWA is not developed for the forhead, it’s best to stick to the cheeks, chin, neck and jawline.

As for myself, I do see a plumped and glowy skin, and it’s definitely in a better condition when using the NEWA. My skin looked smoother after 3 weeks, although I didn’t get to use NEWA 5 times a week. Unfortunately, I work long days, which means I don’t always have the energy to start working my skin, and as for me, that’s the downside of the device, it’s time consuming. Than again, if you want to be pretty, you have to sufffer, in this case, you have to make time.

Which perfumes are safe to wear for a makeup artist?
Perfumes. Can a makeup artist wear any?

We all love to smell good. There are many choices on the fragrance market but what if your work implies to enter the private zone of your client? Can you just wear any perfume that you like?

The answer is no. There’s a makeup artist etiquette that you have to follow, you can’t find a book about it -maybe I should write it!- but if you have some common sense you should know there are certain things not to be done. Wearing a strong scent is one of them. After all, you don’t want to overwhelm the person sitting in your makeup chair.

So which fragrances are ok? Choose a perfume that’s not too strong, but rather fresh, flowery and light. Let me give you some options.

Courrèges – Mini Jupe (2018)

perfumes, makeup artist, Peggy Timmermans, Courrèges, Mini Jupe, La Perla, Coach, Lolita Lempicka, This Is Peggy, scent, fragrance

The name Mini Jupe (mini skirt) is iconic since Courrèges is known for having invented the mini skirt in the 60’s. This fragrance is sweet and girly, but doesn’t have the typical caramel composition that you find often in perfumes nowadays.

This sweet and fruity perfume is perfect for the young artists amongst us. It is quite charming, the notes feature cherry, mandarin, raspberry leaf, iris, rose, angelica, musk and cashmeran. I would suggest just to spray not too much, a little comes a long way!

La Perla – La Mia Perla (2017)

perfumes, makeup artist, Peggy Timmermans, Courrèges, Mini Jupe, La Perla, Coach, Lolita Lempicka, This Is Peggy, scent, fragrance

My favourite one out of the perfumes I’m presenting you today. It’s warm, powdery, creamy and snuggly and I don’t think the person in the makeup chair would have anything against it. The notes feature mandarin, white pepper, jasmine, peony, orris, silky suede ambrox, musk and sandalwood. It’s one of those scents that everybody likes. This perfume is for a woman, not a girl, who feels sophisticated and sensual.

Courrèges La Fille de L’air (2016)

perfumes, makeup artist, Peggy Timmermans, Courrèges, Mini Jupe, La Perla, Coach, Lolita Lempicka, This Is Peggy, scent, fragrance

This ‘airy’ fragrance is for those who like flowery scents. Orange blossom is the main focus in this perfume. It’s light, transparant and pure, with notes such as Calabrian Bergamot, green floral shades of neroli and musk.

What about the male makup artists or hair stylists? Don’t worry, I’ve thought of you too!

Coach – Coach for Men (2017)

perfumes, makeup artist, Peggy Timmermans, Courrèges, Mini Jupe, La Perla, Coach, Lolita Lempicka, This Is Peggy, scent, fragrance

Coach for Men is a modern fragrance which combines fresh, energetic top notes and a skin-like warm sensuality in the amber, woody base notes. It’s a perfume for the modern and energetic man, who’s carefree and confident.

When I’m on a job, I always tone my perfume down. I wont overspray and I will always make sure not to bother the person in my makeup chair. Just remember that the next time you cover yourself in Flowerbomb.

All the above perfumes are exclusively available at Planet Parfum.
