NYX Cosmetics… also for fresh fashion looks.
NYX Cosmetics x a fresh high fashion look!

When I think of NYX Cosmetics not only does the word ‘budget friendly’ comes to mind but I get an instant Insta feeling. #slaythosewords Lots of Youtubers, self declared Insta makeup artists and influencers like to create looks with this popular brand. Often looks that are so over the top, I wouldn’t dare to go outside with that shit load of makeup on my face. Guess it’s obvious I’m not really bit on slaying on layer after layer of foundation, patches of sparkly highlights and strokes of contouring.

So I decided it’s time to pull NYX Cosmetics out of the Insta environment and create a more fresh fashion look with some of their products. After all, they have a huge product range to choose from, and you can create whatever look you want, from super natural to Kim Kardashian anno 2017.

So let’s see which products I’ve used and what look I created on pretty model Annelies Hellem!

As for skin I went for a fresh and flawless base, in this case, less is more! Annelies her brows were already pretty perfect, I simply filled in some gaps and gave them a nice brush. I received some Duo Chromatic lip glosses, but as NYX Cosmetics often puts colours in their collection that are out of the box I decided to use them on the eyes.

I really didn’t want to make the highlighter visible from outer space but wanted to keep it natural and sophisticated. It is possible you know…also with NYX Cosmetics. Born to Glow in an elegant way! From that same palette I’ve used the peachy blush to add some freshness to the face.

A little bit of the same Duo Chromatic lipgloss in the middle of the lips et voilà! The result.

Primers, how to apply?
Primers, the right way to apply them.

Now that you know what a face primer does -check the article here if you missed it!- it’s time to find out how we have to use this magic product. These few steps will create your most beautiful skin!

  • Cleanse & moisturize your skin well: in order to not get flakey makeup you need to cleanse and hydrate your skin well.  Use a light moisturizer and allow it to sit for a few minutes. If you’re using a primer with moisturizer, you may choose to skip this step, although it depends on your skin type.
  • Dab primer on your face: take a small amount of primer on your fingertips. Don’t rub the primer on the face but dab it in, going from the inside to the outside of the face. In case you have very dry cheeks you might want to avoid that area.
  • Blend: make sure all areas are covered evenly, don’t rub too hard though.
  • T-Zone: you can use some extra primer in places where makeup wears off faster like the t-zone or in case you have larger pores. Make sure to apply thin layers.
  • Let it settle: wait for a few minutes for the primer to settle onto the skin before starting your makeup routine.
  • Eye & lip primer: apply eye and lip primer if desired. Some like to use their face primer on the eyelids too, but my experience tells me it’s better to go for a specific eye- and lip primer. The texture is different and the result better.
  • Put on your makeup: you’re ready for the day!

A primer is a great investment for beauty bunnies! No need to worry about your makeup on busy days or a night on the dancefloor. It’s also a must-have in bridal makeup. I have NEVER skipped this step when doing the makeup for a bride.

As for myself, an eyeshadow primer is a must. As a more life experienced woman I don’t want my eyeshadow to run into the little lines or smudge.

Hooray for primers!

Foundation textures: how do they feel & what do they do? Here are the foundation files!

Foundation textures: There are many foundation textures on the market. But how do they look on the skin?

The foundation files are created to help you see the light and choose the perfect match for your skin!

Chapter two: which are the different textures and how do they perform on skin?

Now that we know how to shop the perfect foundation it is time to take a closer look at the textures. From BB to full coverage, for every skin type and every desire there’s a foundation on the market.

  • BB cream: it’s just a fancy name for a tinted moisturizer. Back in the old days the tinted moisturizers were nothing more than a normal moisturizer mixed with a bit of foundation, nowadays they have more benefits. You can find anti-aging, light reflecting, matte, shiny and hydrating BB creams.
  • Liquid foundation: the most popular and most sold foundation version. In the liquids we can also find different versions; the light foundations for a natural result, the transparent to medium foundations, the medium and full coverage ones until the heavy coverage liquid foundations.

  • Cream foundation: this is without a doubt my favourite texture on set. It’s so easy to build up coverage with cream foundation, you can go from super transparent to a heavy coverage by layering without getting a mask effect. However, there are some heavier cream foundations on the market, I tend to use them for artists on stage or theatre.
  • Powder foundation: powder foundation is ideal for touch-ups during the day. There are powder foundations on the market that will provide a full foundation, however if you have dry or mature skin I would recommend to skip these.

  • Mousse foundation: also called whipped foundation is my least favourite texture. This foundation fuses liquid with air, resulting in a smooth, lightweight, fluffy texture. Mousse foundation has a lightweight feel however this foundation mostly provides a matte finish and can feel a little dry.
  • Cushion foundation: as BB creams, the cushion foundations come from Korea, the birthplace of beauty trends. It’s a liquid formula housed in a compact. They are best suited to those who need a little more coverage than a BB cream. I wouldn’t recommend a cushion foundation for oily skin, as most of them have light to medium coverage and are very hydrating or even illuminating. Dry to normal skin will benefit from this formula. My advice: wash the sponge often, as it is a breeding ground for bacteria.

Which texture has your preference?

Five new lipsticks you need to check!

These 5 new lipsticks will concur your heart!

Can a girl ever own too many lipsticks? There no such thing! Here are the ones I recently tried. Yves Rocher Mat promises comfort and an 8 hour hold. Thanks to the camellia oil it glides on nicely and it does feel truly comfortable while wearing. The staying power could be better though. Its firm click-closure and the sturdy but lightweight packaging makes it a travel-friendly lipstick. Nice if you’re looking for a hydrating matte, I wouldn’t use it in my pro-kit though.

I’ve always considered Clarins as a skin care brand, but their Joli Rouge Velvet mat lipstick was a pleasant discovery. It lives up to its name, as the texture feels velvety soft. On the pro side, it’s non-drying, it has a decent pigmentation and I’m in love with its silky feel. The con: it lacks some staying power, you’ll need to re-apply after eating or kissing.

Looking for a bold, vibrant warm red with a matte finish? M.A.C. Viva Glam SIA Limited Edition Matte Lipstick has it all. The black casing features Sia’s signature, which makes it a collector’s item for the fans. If you’re not into Sia’s music, you still might like this lipstick because of its creamy texture, true color, great color payoff and incredible lasting power.

If you’d rather go glossy, check you NYX Stricly Vinyl Lip Gloss. They remind me of the first generation liquid lip glosses, i.e. sticky! I’m pleasantly surprised by its pigmentation, so for flawless application a lip brush works  better than the slanted applicator. Also thumbs up for the longevity, which scores really well in my book. Great quality for a budget pricing!

My most worn lipstick/gloss is a Lancôme one, L’ Absolu Lacquer. It’s a liquid lipstick with a glossy, dewy finish. You van choose your own finish: one swipe gives a translucent flush, two coats adds depth and three coats gives an opaque, full glossy finish. What I like about it is the fact that once the glossy-ness fades, the shade still stays.

The perfect glow: how do you do that?
The perfect glow, everybody wants it but not everybody does it right.

The glow is all around us! I’m a huge fan of skin, fresh, flawless, fruity and glowy or dewy skin. In my opinion putting on layer after layer foundation and powder is not pretty, in fact it’s quite the opposite I believe. In today’s Insta-life many young girls cover themselves up like a bottle of foundation is a bargain, not to speak about the stripes of contouring and big patches of highlighter… It strikes me how often I see young girls on the street that shine like a patchy silver disco ball, you can spot them from 5 meter’s distance. Let me show you how you can create a beautiful subtle and healthy glow.

The cream and liquid highlighters:

BE Creative Highlighter Palette * Guerlain Météorites Strobing Palette ¨Dior Nude Air Luminizer

Before anything I start with cleansing my pretty model Louise’s face. After that it’s time to moisturize her skin. I like to give the people in my chair a little face massage, in this care I’ve used the Pixi Rose Oil Blend. Not only does it stimulate the blood circulation, it also makes the skin look radiant and dewy.

I apply the rest of the makeup ‘in the rough’ -I always come back later to finish the details- and apply a liquid (or cream) highlighter on top of the cheekbones and cupid bow.

As you can see just applying is not enough, obviously you have to blend the product out. I prefer to do this with my fingertips, as the warmth of my skin will make the product blend in really well.

If you want to create a stronger effect or you want your highlight to last long, you can add a highlighter powder on top.

In case you have a ‘good’ nose you can apply some highlighter on the nose bridge. You can either choose for liquid, cream or powder.  Don’t do this is you have a wide nose, unless you want it to look bigger…

How highlighter performs on camera depends on the light. As you can see on the picture below you can’t barely see the highlighter on the cheekbones, as that side of her face is in a shadow. However, the highlight on the center of the nose and cupid bow shows really well.

On the following picture the lightning hits the left side of her face really well, and we can see a subtle glow on the cheekbones. I’ve used Elisabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream to make the eyelids really glossy.
